In the Fuzhou dialect, the pronunciation of “Frog” (Wa) is similar to “Armor” (Jia), and because the frog’s back is dark like iron, it was called “General Iron Armor.” Years ago, it is said He was promoted to “Marshal” by the Jade Emperor, further enhancing his prestige.
Legend: Turning Frogs into Soldiers to Repel Pirates
In the late Qing Dynasty, pirates were rampant in the Fujian seas. Once, a pirate fleet gathered off the coast of Qinbi, preparing to loot. As the pirates observed with telescopes, they were shocked to see the shore lined with soldiers, a magnificent army. Terrified, the pirates retreated immediately.
In reality, there were no troops in the village. The villagers believed it was the Frog God Taiwan casting a spell, transforming the frogs by the sea into divine soldiers, protecting Qinbi Village from war.

One day, the Marshal instructed via the medium: “I want to see the villagers perform Peking Opera for me.” This stumped the residents of Qinbi—they were fishermen, what did they know about Peking Opera?
But to fulfill the God’s wish, Qinbi villagers mobilized and invited teachers from Taiwan’s National GuoGuang Opera Company. Over 50 villagers put down their hoes and nets to learn movements and singing from scratch. Thus, Taiwan’s only “Qinbi Amateur Peking Opera Troupe” was born.
Interestingly, the Marshal personally “casts” the roles. It is said He once designated a villager named Chen to play the unfaithful husband Chen Shimei, hoping to educate the heart through drama and warn villagers not to forget their roots. This shows the wisdom of the deity in teaching through entertainment.

- Magistrate’s Rain Prayer: A former Lienchiang County Magistrate once personally prayed to the Marshal for rain to stop so a sports event could proceed. The deity instructed rituals for three days. On the day of the event, the sky cleared, and rain poured down immediately after the closing ceremony, amazing everyone.
- Marriage Arbitrator: In traditional society, marriages of young people in Qinbi required the Marshal’s approval via moon blocks (divination). If the answer was no, villagers would rather break off the engagement than defy the divine will. He acts as the village’s marriage counselor, maintaining family harmony.
